Why I’m Quitting Blogging

I’ve been having a bit of a dilemma lately, I need to make cut backs in certain areas so that I can get more time for others! This is the problem when you have so many interests and two businesses to run! Well I say two, I really need to find time for my second one that I’m trying to set up. I made some much needed charges to my vintage selling business to free up some time but it’s not enough, I need to make more cut backs elsewhere.

This has been playing on my mind a bit for the last few months and as much as I love blogging, it seems I don’t love it enough to keep in on the stay list. I have been blogging since early 2009, I’ve never been a very dedicated blogger, it’s waxed and waned over the years, over the last few months the urge to blog seems to be waning and trying to keep up is becoming a chore. I never wanted to be a professional blogger, I definitely fall into the hobbyist catagory so not keeping up in the blogging loop has never really bothered me that much. But i do still enjoy reading other people’s blogs.

August is always a good time for reflection, things slow down in the summer for business as everyone is a way and it frees up time to do a little reevaluating of things. I feel that I’m spreading myself to thinly these days Β and with so much to keep up with am a) only producing half arsed worked and b) not getting enough personal time in. So I’m cutting back and refocusing that energy into projects that require it especially my new shop, I’m so far behind its silly! So that means I’m putting the blog on hiatus for a while maybe forever. I like writing and want to also focus on some creative pieces that have been languishing in a pile and if I choose between writing a blog or writing a novel, i think I’ll give the novel a go.

I’ve enjoyed blogging (most of the time) but now I feel is the time to let it go and move on as my heart really isn’t invested in it anymore. Maybe one day it will again but for now I’m concentrating on other things. I’m toying with turning this site into more of a professional portfolio and keeping the blog as an archive but there are so many things going on over the next few months, I’ll come to that decision later.

And welcome to our new home. Just a quick postΒ  to say as you can see we are no longer on Blogger. The old blog will continue to run for a little while until everything is set up here, sorry it’s a little bit messy, I still have some odds and ends to finish formatting but it’s only day one!

As per my earlier post, there are lots of changes happening and while some will take longer thanΒ  others, I can at least carry on with blogging, well I do have 58 posts in draft so I should be okay for a while at least. Also as you can see I’ve had a name change and also a brand new spanking domain to match, which makes me very happy.

Style posts have been on hold recently for a reason and I’m writing about that, not that I’ve had much time to focus on outfit posts but I have a few other posts to keep me going for a while, so I will be blogging about other stuff in the mean. It might take a while to get into my groove over here, what with everything else going on but you patience is appreciated.

Until the next post

Making Changes

I’m a big fan of change, change is good, change is growth. When people tell me I’ve changed I take is a compliment, I don’t want to get stuck and stagnate. Some people dislike change and that’s okay, that is their choice and I’m not here to question that. But things change regardless, we get older, we learn, we are shaped and influenced by our surroundings, by our experiences and sometimes we outgrow our old selves and it’s time to embrace our new selves. Spring I feel is always a good time to implement any changes we want to, we come out of semi hibernation from winter, the days are getting longer, our energy levels getting higher, it’s a good time to get the ball rolling on starting anything new and that’s what I’m currently doing. I’ve had time over the quieter months to think about what’s working, what’s not and how to move forward with my business/life and what I want to be doing.
I came up with Natasha de Vil when I briefly flirted with burlesque, I never made it to the stage but I enjoyed dance the lessons and finding my alter ego. I initially used it to set up a separate FB page to hang out with my vintage and burly friends but it just ended up being who I became to be known as and it stuck. I thought about changing it a lot but I kind of preferred having it as a handle for various reasons mainly my business. I threw myself into the world of self employment three years ago after my last job got so toxic it was making me ill, my hair starting to fall out was probably when I realised that it was me or them and if I didn’t act on it I was only punishing myself. I was fortunate enough to have (and still do) someone supporting me and helping me along the way. I tend to fall into things and just go with the flow but recently that has not been feeling right and I need to make some changes.
I’ve been think about turning 40 a lot lately, I figured by now I would have sussed, achieved a lot more but I realise that doesn’t matter. We live in a world obsessed with achieving goals/targets etc that we forget that in the grand scheme of things it’s not that relevant. I see people obsessed by numbers, weight/followers/earnings but it goes beyond healthy, beyond competitive and down to obsessive. I myself have become a little obsessed with goal and challenges recently but mostly to improve myself, I really don’t care what other people think, I want to push myself to the best of my abilities after years of believing this is the best I have to offer! I’m not having a turn forty crisis, in fact I’ve kind of been looking forward to it, treating a new decade as a new chapter of adventures which is why I’ve decided to let go of being known as Natasha de Vil, as it just feels right.
So I opened up a new store, as you might know I am focusing on what I’ve really wanted to do all this time which is more art based. I’ve always loved art, I’ve never formally trained but over the years I kept making promises to myself to take it up again that I never kept, maybe because the timing wasn’t right or maybe I’ve just been hesitant in taking the next big step, probably a little bit of both. I’ll be talking about getting back into art based stuff in a future post, as I fear it will make this post far too long to read but that’s the short of it.
The Natasha de Vil etsy shop will still be around for as long as it is. I’ll been using it to sell all old designs and supplies until they have gone, and then will be keeping it for vintage as I still love vintage and vintage will always be apart of my life. Natasha de Vil was kind of born out the vintage lifestyle I found and fell in love with when I first got into the blogging back in 2009, so it seems apt to keep the name for the shop and not kill her off completely. It will probably have it’s own Instagram account (so much for streamlining but a perk of giving up FB I guess) dedicated to all things vintage and vintage selling. I have some lovely new stock that has recently arrived and things seem to be slowly fitting into place.
So there it is, a change that has been unfolding over time, and is still happening, these things take time to deal with, changing handles, links etc, a faff I know but that’s just the way it is. The blog will be changing a bit too, mainly in name, I tend to blog about whatever takes my fancy and it will probably stay that way with a few more work/art pieces thrown in for good measure. I just can’t decide whether to stay here on blogger or move to WordPress or maybe even Squarespace but that’s a decision for another day.

Top Ten Posts of 2016

Whilst there were a few stressful times throughout 2016, on the grand scheme of things, 2016 turned out pretty okay in the end for me but I’ve decided to things a little different this year in regards to my what happened in 2016 posts.

I did start doing my top tens last year but then Christmas came and I decided to give myself some time off and chill out over the festive season whilst reviewing over things to make plans for this year. My list is already very long, especially creative wise. But one of my goals is definitely to blog more and get into a regular blogging schedule. I’ve been blogging on and off since 2009 and to be honest I do love it. I’m always a little worried about my blog having too many topics, that is until I decided to look at my top ten posts of last year and saw that actually, they covered a wide range of topics, proving that’s it’s always good to write about want you want, rather than writing about what you think people want to read. Your audience will find you.

I also started writing about other topics such as style and more opinion led pieces and they did pretty also did pretty well, so that’s definitely encouraged me to keep on stepping outside my boundaries and writing stuff like that.

So here are my top ten posts from last year, the first three (and the top three) outfit posts. Although I didn’t post as many outfit as I’d have liked to next year I plan on posting a lot more!

Release The Stars Dress

And as a bonus one of my favourite posts I wrote last year 10 Things To Do In San Francisco not only because it was out Honeymoon but it is now one of my favourite places in the world. Definitely need to go back and explore some more.

Pink House//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

We even found the most Instagrammed house in the world!

So as you can see my top ten posts were quite a mixed bag of topics and I think that’s a good thing!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year and I hope you had a fabulous evening last night however you choose to celebrate, me I did my usual, stay in watch movies and drink gin whilst knitting but as always I’ve been thinking about my goals for the year ahead. I did manage to achieve quite a bit, as always some goals were met and and some weren’t. I’ll be blogging about the ones met and rolling over the ones that weren’t like I always do, to fit them in with this years goals. I always kinda set my goal list high so I ended up achieving that bit more than if I had set it lower.
Last year I made quite a long list, this year the list is a little short but each goal has a bigger outcome (sort of). So what are my plans?
More Clothing Sewing – I’ve already been stocking up on fabric in the sales for my projects and my make list this year is pretty long. I definitely intend to incorporate more vintage/retro styles into my wardrobe and make some of those things I didn’t get round to last year like trousers and a jacket! These items are pretty high up on the list this year to ensure they get made earlier, as I really have plenty of dresses and skirts already, so tops are another one to work on as well. If the Vintage Pledge is running this year am definitely going to rejoin that as well
Blog More – and about lots of different things. I have a post coming up on my top ten posts from last year and it put my mind at ease at blogging about too many different things but definitely to blog more about the things I like and interest me. Although I don’t like to get too political on here and shove my beliefs onto others, I feel that if the last year has taught us anything to stand up for what we believe in, even if it is scary and there is always going to be someone who disagrees with you or tells you to stop being you, so the best way to combat that is to be the best you van be by be true to yourself. It’s gonna be a rough few years but we need to keep fighting and believing in what’s right!
Photography – I’m already using my 365 days of stitching project to try and improve my photography. So far because most of my pictures have been taken at night when I remembered over the holidays, they’re still not that great but definitely going to also working on composition and lighting over the year and also more creative pictures for my blog which kind of ties in in with next goal.
More Art – Art has always been apart of my life and every year I say I’m going to start drawing and painting again and maybe this year I will. Well I have to really because those designs aren’t going to draw themselves! Plus I want to incorporate art into more things like my embroidery and photography.
More Reading – Another year where I didn’t meet my reading target on Goodreads but still managed to read more books that any other year, so I guess that’s an achievement in itself. This year my goal is to read more of my non fiction books. Last year I read a few biographies and found that I really enjoyed those. I’ve pulled out some of my non fiction books in regards to fashion, art and entertainment that I’ve been hoarding and intend to read those. I’m also catching up on my feminist reading as last year I was reminded how important it is to stick to your beliefs in these trying times. I think this year is more about educating myself but I got given a kindle for Christmas so I will still be indulging in the odd fiction fantasy when on the move. I’m currently working my way through the Wizard of Oz series on that when commuting about. Almost forgot to include my massive hoard of independent magazines I’ve been collecting as well!
More Creativity – This year I really want to push my boundaries when it comes to be creative. So far I feel I’ve been playing it a bit safe mainly due to the fact that most of it has bee due to running a business. Last year I found myself saying no to more people and setting my boundaries with them but pushing over the boundaries in regards to my work and liking the results. There is always this fear that a collection or your work won’t be well received or sell but it’s time to let that fear go and just do what I need to do!
I’m sure I’ve missed some stuff off but I’ve got a few other pots lined up. January is really all about catching up and tying up lose ends and finished the last of the projects and that’s about it really. Hope you’re all having a good day resting and recharging because that’s I’m doing, ready to commence my projects tomorrow!

What are your creative plans for this year?
