This is the second time I’ve seen Ed Harcourt this year, the first time as you know was when he was supporting Afghan Whigs at The Electric Ballroom, this time in between touring with Marian Faithful and writing songs for the Burbury Campaign he headlined his own show at The East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf.
The East Wintergarden is a small venue, it was a relaxed gig, everyone got to sit at a table with a drink, a tiny can of coke was £2.50, turns out a bottle of wine would have been more cost effective if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m allergic! Next time I’m sneaking in my own drinks!
Support was provided by Ren Harvieu who had a sweet and soulful voice. Came back later to duet with Ed.
I’ve seen Ed do shows before where by he plays the majority of the songs and instruments solo, inviting guests up to accompany him of various songs like Nick, who is an amazing trumpet player.
The set included many from his vast back catalogue, the new Burbury campaign song and a few from his upcoming album.
He was as always funny, he said the gig was a shambles but the thing I like about Harcourt is that he loves playing music, he interacts with his audience, he swears when he fucks up a song but then gets right back to it, he even comes down into the audience and serenades a few people at their table.
The problem with writing about gigs a few weeks after is that I’ve forgotten half the set list and apologies for the poor phone pictures but I forgot my camera.
