So this post is a little behind considering that the whole Diane Abbott racism business was last week and after finally catching up and reading what was actually said I have to say as per usual the majority of people over reacted by calling it racist.
When ever someone refers to a race in a statement many people are all to quick to judge and call it racism, maybe that’s the fault of the PC police. Now don’t get me wrong if someone uses words in order to hurt, slander, humiliate or as hate against someone then yes it is wrong and that person should be dealt with accordingly. However what the PC police also need to do is learn the difference between racism and sweeping stereotypes which I believe these statements she made to be.
Although social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, forums, etc are great tools of communication unlike in a real face to face conversation it’s hard to judge someone’s tone, as that makes all the difference in the actually meaning behind the statement and all too often on the web words are taken the wrong way mainly depending on someone’s mood (trust me I’ve been there!). Also trying to make a statement in 140 characters is not as easy as you think.
I think people need to take time to use their common sense, I mean would a politician like Diane Abbott really be openly racist on something like Twitter, I think not. It’s just her opinion, even if you don’t agree with it, it doesn’t make her a racist. It might make her wrong but not a racist.
Anyway that’s my opinion whether you agree with it or not.
